(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The University of Illinois campus in Urbana-Champaign has reached a milestone with an innovative COVID-19 test it developed.
U of I President Tim Killeen on Tuesday said the school has surpassed 1 million saliva-based COVID-19 tests.
Killeen says the testing has dramatically limited the spread of the virus on campus and to the neighboring communities.
The U of I requires students, faculty members and staff to get tested at least once a week, which allows the school to intervene quickly and isolate anyone who tests positive, the president said.
The saliva test has drawn attention nationally and internationally as an alternative to more expensive and slower nasal swab tests.
It's also being evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
