(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For more than 30 years, one of Chicago's sister cities has been the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
That's why a leader of the local Ukrainian community hopes Chicagoans will urge their representatives in Congress to support tougher measures to deter a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Vera Eliashevsky, co-chair of the Kyiv Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, said she is pleased with the U.S. government's strong stance with Russia. But Washington can and should do more, she told WBBM Newsradio on Tuesday.
One idea: "Put heavy-duty sanctions on their economy because that definitely will hurt them," Eliashevsky said.
She said she also would like the U.S. to provide more military aid to Ukraine.
