CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Union support staff in the Chicago Public Schools have reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year contract.

The Service Employees International Union Local 73 calls the tentative agreement “historic.”

All full-time workers earn at least $40,000 a year.  They include special education classroom assistants and security guards, among others.

“After a year-long fight, our Union members are finally being recognized for their commitment and have secured much needed raises that will greatly improve the lives of these essential workers and provide the respect they deserve," said Dian Palmer, President of SEIU Local 73.

Workers will see four percent raises for the first two years and four-to-five percent for the last two.

There will also be more professional development and training.

CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said the agreement reflects the district’s “commitment to a fair and equitable contract.”
