(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Ellyn Weisz, director of the Early Childhood Center at Beth Tikvah Congregation in Hoffman Estates, is no stranger to helping educate kids.
She’s been in the field since 1973. Besides running the center, Weisz also teaches 4- and 5-year olds — five days a week, 12 months a year.
“Young children are amazing. They are honest, they have great sense of humor, they keep us laughing, they keep us on our toes at all times. They’re sponges, they want to learn,” she said.
Last year, Weisz was honored for Excellence in Jewish Early Childhood Education from the Jewish United Fund Chicago.
She says it’s clear she and other early childhood teachers do what they do for the love of children because the pay and benefits aren’t that great.
“Here I am teaching almost 50 years with no pension or 401k,” she said.
Ellyn Weisz is also a breast cancer survivor and volunteered on her weeklong vacation last month to help Ukrainian refugees in Poland.
