For more than three months, the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Will County was not able to provide military honors to veterans who were buried there.

And now, because some COVID restrictions have been eased, the cemetery has been performing dozens of makeup memorial services.

There were more than 400 burials from March until June. None received military honors because of pandemic.

Cemetery Director Quincy McCall says at the beginning of the summer, the cemetery started doing makeup memorials. Military honors once again were provided by the all-volunteer Memorial Squad.

"We've done close to 130 makeup services for those families that did not receive honors, and it's going pretty good right now."

McCall says they're catching up. About  20 makeup services are scheduled through the end of the year.

Some families are choosing to wait to have the service on the anniversary of the veteran's death, she said.
