(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The City of Gary has released video from a sting operation that led to a fatal shooting earlier this week.

On Wednesday, police said an officer was taking part in an undercover investigation on Maryland Street near East 34th Avenue when the suspect attacked an officer with a machete.

Video released shows this incident. In footage that was shot from the officer, the suspect is seen making a sale to the undercover officer and then suddenly attacking him.

The video can be viewed below. Warning: The video contains graphic violence.

Gary's Police Chief Derrick Cannon said officers were investigating a rash of robberies targeting people trying to buy items advertised on social media.

Police said officers engaged with the suspect who they say continued to act violently. Police say that is what led to an officer shooting the man.

The undercover officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a hospital.
