CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It was a busy night at the Chicago Board of Elections where the votes are still being counted.
Max Bever with the Chicago Board of Election said that despite the speeches, the election is not officially over. The turnout was about 33%, but that could still inch up.
"That's going to improve as more of these vote by mail ballots come back. Last time for February 28, we ended election night with just over 32%, but that improved to almost 36% when all of those vote by mail ballots came back," he explained.
"So tonight we're just over 33%. I imagine you'll see a pretty similar return rate on those vote by mail ballots and probably get us up to about 37% city wide turnout. That's not very big, comparatively to presidential years or to mid-term years, but you know, that does make every vote count."
Most of the aldermanic races were not very close though. There were some tight contests, including the 21st ward on the South side, in the South Side lakefront's 5th Ward and in the 29th Ward on the West side.
