(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation says they don’t know when a couple of closed lanes will re-open on southbound I-55 over Illinois Route 53, after a massive hole opened in the bridge deck this week.

It was more than a pothole. In fact, the hole was so big that concrete had to be used to fill it. Now, IDOT’s Maria Castaneda says the wait goes on until the concrete is cured.

Crews have even placed a tent over the repair at Bolingbrook to help speed it up.

"It was definitely more than something you’d just put asphalt in and patch,” she said, adding that it could take awhile.

Castaneda says the hole opened up at a time when the entire bridge deck is in the process of being replaced. That work is expected to be complete sometime in the fall.

Currently, she says crews are working underneath the bridge deck.
