CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A city Law Department employee who fraudulently received jobless benefits. A city customer service representative who stole checks from utility customers.

These are two examples of workplace misconduct detailed in the latest City of Chicago Inspector General’s report.

The IG said a Law Department paralegal got unemployment benefits of more than $14,000 over at least six months while employed by the city.

The IG also reported a customer service representative who worked as a subcontractor with utility customers. While sorting the mail, this employee allegedly stole checks from envelopes and deposited the money in a personal bank account.

The total: more than $12,000.

The IG’s office says the paralegal resigned and the customer service rep was terminated. The latter case was referred to Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Also Friday, the IG’s office reported a foreman in the Department of Water Management submitted paperwork claiming 20 diamond saw blades — worth 4-$4,000 — had been requested by Water Department employees.

But the inspector said those employees had not requested the blades. Most of them were found in the truck of a Water Department district superintendent who had resigned earlier in the day.

The IG says the foreman was fired and placed on the do-not-hire list.
