(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Decades old factory on Chicago's West Side is one step away from landmark status.

A proposal introduced to City Council this week would designate the Spanish Revival facade on the Mars Candy Factory in Austin an official Chicago landmark. The building first opened on North Oak Park Avenue in 1929.

A Cleveland-based engineering firm is behind the exotic design.

The Austin company helped introduce the world to candies like Snickers, Milky Way and Three Musketeers.

The landmark designation would protect parts of the building, which is expected to be redeveloped following the anticipated closure this year.
