AURORA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The superintendent of School District 129 is gauging the snowfall to determine whether buildings will close this week.
"In fact, this is probably one of the most impactful, most difficult decisions that we make," Superintendent of West Aurora School District 129 Jeff Craig told WBBM.
He described how he decides whether or not to cancel school during inclement winter weather.
"It's not optimal, and so what we've said is if we're going to be out more than one day, we'll probably implement e-learning," Craig explained.
"If it's going to be a singular day-let's just say there's a huge dump of snow and we decided to use a day we would use an emergency day so we just call a snow day where there's no expectations or obligations, school- related at that time."
Craig also mentioned other factors he and other officials discuss when deciding whether or not to declare a snow day including "whether we think our buses can get our kids from the bus stops to the school safely, other staff members can get to our buildings in a safe manner, can we get our sidewalks clear... our parking lots clear, work with our city streets and sanitation to make sure that the main terminal routes are cleared off."
