CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A dog attack put a woman in the hospital on the city's Northwest Side Friday and injured her dog.

The woman was walking a small dog in the Kilbourn Park neighborhood when a pit bull got loose.

Sebastian Mendez was near the scene on Kildare Avenue and Roscoe Street and so was George Synowiech.

Both men spoke to CBS 2. The pit bull had the small dog in it’s jaws, according to Mendez.

"The dog – it had the little one. I tried hitting it with a stick. That dog would not let go of the little one. I picked up the dog and I just ran to (a) gate, and I put it in there," he said.

Synowiech helped the woman get free by jumping onto the pitbull.

"I saw a woman being dragged on the street by her hair by a dog," he said

Police and Animal Care and Control were soon there and the pit bull was taken away. The woman was taken to a hospital.

Her injuries were not life-threatening. Its unclear how badly injured the smaller dog was.
