(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Workers at a local hotel owned by Northwestern Memorial HealthCare say it is time for them to speak up about unfair working conditions.

Those checking in to the Hyatt Centric Magnificent Mile location were greeted with barriers outside in the form of dozens of angry workers, including bartender Andri Mile.

“Working at the Hyatt is not enough for me. I cannot afford my health insurance,” he said.

Lou Weeks, executive vice president of UNITE HERE Local 1, said a recent survey of the hotel’s workers found that more than 20 percent have no health insurance, and one in three reported the need to rely on public assistance.

“Meanwhile, the owner of the Hyatt Centric, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, and its subsidiaries reported total revenue of $8.7 billion in the year ending August 31st, 2023. That is outrageous,” Weeks said.

If nothing changes, workers here say the future is unclear.
