Wrigley Field transforms into football stadium

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Northwestern University football returns to Wrigley Field as the Friendly Confines have been transformed into a college stadium.

"We converted Wrigley Field into a football field," said Anthony Spatafora, Chicago Cubs facility specialist.

Half of the Cubs infield has been converted into a college football field. The Northwestern end zone now takes over the Cubs dugout.

"Having goal posts in Wrigley Field takes us back to the Bears games so it's been a great process over the past couple years with Northwestern," said Spatafora.

Northwestern football last played at Wrigley Field in 2010.

Wrigley Field has an intrinsic history with football. From 1921 to 1970, the landmark stadium was once the home of the Chicago Bears. Now, Northwestern football has begun a new football tradition.

"We have a great relationship with Northwestern. It's great to bring new fans to Wrigley Field," said Spatafora.

Over the course of the last month, Spatafora estimates about 1,000 workers have helped transform the Friendly Confines. The metamorphosis of the field is an effort to attract new fans — and have fun along the way.

"To be able to bring a college environment to Wrigley Field is always fun and we're always looking at ways to make Wrigley more accessible for everyone," said Spatafora.

The Northwestern University Wildcats will face the Iowa University Hawkeyes this Saturday, November 4 at 11:10 a.m. at Wrigley Field.
