CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One week ago, the city of Chicago's coronavirus positivity rate was 3.3%.
On Wednesday, it was 4.5%. City leaders warn they'll ban spectators from the city's baseball fields and neighboring bars if cases continue to grow.
No so fast, say operators of bars around Wrigley Field. They said they're ready and able to follow COVID-19 restrictions when fans show up for the Cubs’ Opening Day on Thursday.
In fact, Maureen Martino noted, the businesses already had a successful dry run with the recent St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
“We did not have one incident in Wrigleyville,” said Martino, executive director of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce.
She recommends fans reserve space ahead of time, as bars and taverns will be observing limits.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported nearly 2,600 new and probable cases of coronavirus, including 28 additional deaths. Twenty of those deaths were in Cook County.
