Thousands of pounds of ground beef from an Oregon-based distributor are being recalled across the West due to a potential E. coli contamination, federal officials have announced.
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service warned consumers Thursday to avoid 28,356 pounds of beef produced on Dec. 20 at Interstate Meat Distributors, located in Clackamas.

The beef may be on the shelves of WinCo, Walmart, Kroger and Albertsons in Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and Oregon, or already in the kitchens of unsuspecting customers.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service "is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers," officials stated, urging people to throw away the products or return them to the place of purchase.
Products under the recall will have establishment number "EST. 965" inside the USDA mark of inspection, officials said.
Anyone concerned about the illness caused by E. coli should contact a healthcare provider. The potentially deadly can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps for two to eight days. Most people recover within a week, but some can develop kidney failure.
Along with the announcement, USDA released a list of Interstate Meat Distributors ground beef products possibly contaminated by E coli.
