The Los Angeles Police Department shared that a shooting broke out on Saturday at a Royal Palms beach, injuring five people. The shooting took place just miles from where the city had hosted a gun buy-back event earlier in the day.
Los Angeles City Councilmember Tim McOsker shared in a statement that he and Janice Hahn, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors chair, were “outraged and saddened” by the shooting.
Police responded to a call of a shooting at the beach around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Lt. Sharon Brady with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Community Police Station shared with the LA Times.
A preliminary investigation found that two men had approached a group of people, an altercation began, and the shooting followed soon after.
Five victims were struck by gunfire in the incident, four of whom were taken to a local hospital by first responders with the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fifth was brought by a private party, the police shared.
The LAPD also shared that four victims are listed in stable condition, while the fifth is in critical condition. Police said the victims are in the age range of 20 to 40 years old, FoxLA reported.
The two suspects fled the scene, and police are asking anyone with information about who they might be to speak up. A spokesperson for the LAPD, Warren Moore, shared that the suspects were seen fleeing in a gray sedan.
“It’s tragically ironic that today we hosted a gun buy-back event just a few miles away from this location,” the statement from McOsker and Hahn said. “Gun violence is wreaking havoc on our community.”
Hahn shared on Twitter that the event hosted by her office saw 45 guns exchanged, including at least four assault weapons.
