An eight-month-old baby abandoned in a field by his mother was recovered safely by the Baton Rouge Police Department after spending the night out in the elements.
The baby was brought to a local hospital for precautionary treatment, but didn’t appear to have suffered any injuries, according to BRPD.
Police say there are no charges pending against the baby boy’s mother, who appears to suffer from her own medical issues, but that the investigation remains open.
The baby’s mother did help in the search for the child and eventually managed to take the authorities to where she left her child, ending a search that included Acadian Ambulance, Emergency Medical Services, Parish Search and Rescue, the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office, the Baton Rouge Fire Department and hospital staff members.
“We were able to bring the mother to the scene, city police took the mother, the mother showed them an area on Plank Road near a church,” Curt Monte of the Baton Rouge Fire Department told WAFB.
“The medics jumped on him and started treating him right away and... I think he's gonna be fine, “added Mike Chutz of East Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Services to WAFB. “The timing didn't give us a lot of hope but the baby was tough.”
The search began when the baby’s mother went to a local fire station looking for medical treatment and was eventually checked into a mental health facility. While being treated there, she spoke of leaving her baby in a field, according to WBRZ.
