This Friday marks the fifth year that the U.S. has celebrated Juneteenth – a celebration of the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas years after President Abraham Lincoln made the announcement – as a federal holiday.
Throughout the country, there are events held to remember and recognize the 2.5 years it took for former slaves in Galveston, Texas to learn that they had been freed. These include Opal Lee’s annual Walk for Freedom, Juneteenth celebrations in Minnesota and more.

What’s open?
Big box stores
Walmart and Target will be open today, as well as wholesale retailers Costco and Sam’s Club.
Grocery stores
Most grocery stores will be open on Juneteenth, including Albertsons, Aldi, HEB, Kroger, Publix, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and Whole Foods.
Drug stores
CVS and Walgreens locations are expected to be open on Juneteenth.
Retail stores
If you need to get shopping done, you can expect Apple, Bass Pro Shop, Best Buy, Home Depot, HomeGoods, Homesense, IKEA, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s, Marshalls, Petco, Nordstrom, Sierra, TJ Maxx and more to be open.
Restaurants
Many chain restaurants will be open on Juneteenth, including Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Dunkin, IHOP, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Taco Bell and Wendy’s.
What’s closed?
Banks
For the most part, credit unions and other financial institutions will be closed on Juneteenth. Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Capital One, M&T, PNC, Santander, Truist and Wells Fargo are all expected to be closed.
Stock markets
Like banks, U.S. stock markets follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule and will be close Friday.
U.S. Postal Service deliveries will also be paused on Friday and the Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed. However, UPS and FedEx will be doing deliveries.
