DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Bitter-cold temperatures are making an appearance this week in North Texas and in places across the Midwest, with snow in Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit.

Texans woke up to temperatures in the mid to upper 30s with wind chills near 30°s. This unseasonable weather pattern will continue through Thursday, with a killing frost in the forecast on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.

While keeping yourself, pets and your water pipes protected from the cold is important, there is also another area of concern that is often overlooked; plants.

Below are some tips:

- Anything you've recently planted will need to be protected.

- First water those plants, especially the ones in containers, then cover them with an old blanket or some burlap, that helps keep the heat in.

- If possible, move whatever plants you can indoors, even if it's just into the garage, that will give them a little extra protect from the frigid weather.

Another idea for outdoor plants, if you so choose to get ahead of the holidays, is getting your Christmas lights out early. You can disperse them around your flower beds, but make sure to use outdoor-type lights only.
