A suspected drunken driver in Texas saved himself a trip to a holding cell when he crashed into the Hidalgo County Courthouse over the weekend.
The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Saturday when the 21-year-old driver apparently lost control of his Ford F-150, crashed through an iron fence surrounding the courthouse and then drove through a second fence protecting an air conditioning unit.
Although the suspect got out of his vehicle and ran, a good Samaritan caught him and held him down until officers arrived.
The man, later identified as Jorge Hugo Contreras, was also found to be carrying an unlawful weapon.
Contreras was arraigned on charges including driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and duty on striking fixture, KRGV reported. Bond was set at $25,000.
No injuries were reported in the crash.
Officials with Hidalgo County said in a statement that crews worked through the holiday weekend to repair the "heavy damage" caused by the crash. Despite the incident, the courthouse was able to open and operate normally on Monday.
