DEARBORN (WWJ) — Ford Motor Company has announced its first recall on its all-new, fully electric F-150 Lightning trucks over a tire pressure issue.
The recall, announced by the Dearborn automaker on Monday, affects roughly 2,9000 trucks and surrounds the EVs tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) — the recall only applies to certain 2022 trucks that were delivered with 20-inch or 22-inch all-season tires.
The company said the tire pressure monitoring system light "may not illuminate when intended and may not be able to provide adequate warning of low tire inflation pressure."
The issue was discovered when the company realized the recommended tire cold inflation pressure value in the Body Control Module (BCM) was mistakenly set to 35 psi rather than the correct inflation pressure of 42 psi, Ford explained.
"Low tire inflation pressure may lead to poor vehicle handling and a possible loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of crash," the company said. "Ford encourages customers to check their tire pressure matches figures provided on the Tire and Loading Information label located inside the driver-side front door jamb."
The automaker estimates 2,666 of its Lightning vehicles in the U.S. and 220 trucks in Canada are affected — so far, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related with the TPMS issue.
The automaker began the process of notifying dealers of the safety recall on Monday; F-150 Lightning owners will be notified via email and the FordPass mobile app starting Tuesday, June 28.
Ford said a software update provided at their dealers will fix the problem for Lightning owners who would like the problem fixed immediately; the process takes apporximently 20 minutes.
All customers are urged by Ford to double-check that their tire pressure matches the recommended psi on the Tire and Loading Information label located on the driver's side in the front door jamb.
The company said a Ford Power-Up software update will be available in 30 days for all Lightning customers.
