Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently discussed the growing influence of artificial intelligence, sharing Sunday that there may come a time when AI reaches a “dangerous” point.
The remarks from Schmidt came during his interview with ABC News, during which he discussed a time when humanity may want to step back from the technology, as it could grow too powerful.
“When the system can self-improve, we need to seriously think about unplugging it,” Schmidt said.
He added that he thinks AI may, at some point, move to where computers can define their own objectives, creating a dangerous situation for humans.
Schmidt recently wrote a book about the growing power of AI called “Genesis.” He and his co-author, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, wrote that in the face of AI’s “incredible power,” we will have to work at “preserving human dignity and values.”
“It’s going to be hugely hard. It’s going to be very difficult to maintain that balance,” Schmidt said. “Because the system has moved so quickly.”
The former tech CEO also spoke about China’s role in the world of AI, saying that while the US is ahead of all other nations, China has gained ground in the past year and could soon surpass America’s technology programs.
“The Chinese are clever, and they understand the power of a new kind of intelligence for their industrial might, their military might, and their surveillance system,” Schmidt said.
Still, he noted that guardrails need to be put in place.
“Humans will not be able to police AI, but AI systems should be able to police AI,” he said.
