While hiking on the Grand Canyon National Park trail on Thursday, one hiker from Canada collapsed and passed away, according to the National Park Service.

A statement released by the service identified the victim as 41-year-old Melanie Goodine from Ottawa, Ontario.

Temperatures have been high in Arizona, and on Saturday, they reached as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit within the Inner Canyon.

But on Thursday, Goodine was making her way out of the Arizona canyon after she had traversed the terrain to the Colorado River earlier that day.

But at 5:50 p.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call of a hiker in distress.

The hiker, later identified as Goodine, was on the Bright Angel Trail, just above Three-Mile Resthouse. After the center received the call, Goodine’s condition worsened, and she became unresponsive while bystanders began attempting CPR.

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating what happened to Goodine, but no further information has been made available at this point.

The Park Service has warned of dangerous heat, issuing a statement saying, “Be prepared for heat, hike early, take plenty of water [and[ snacks and protect yourself from the sun. Hikers [and] runners should always carry water purification or filtration with them. All Corridor Trail water is on. Except Supai Tunnel on N. Kaibab Trail.”
