A tourist in Hawaii who was visiting from New York fell to his death on Sunday at one of Kauai’s famous waterfalls, according to law enforcement officials in the state.
The Kaua‘i Police Department identified the man as 30-year-old Mathew Wu, who was hiking at Hanakāpī‘ai Falls in Hāʻena when he fell to his death, a press release shared.
The department shared that first responders received a call that a man had fallen off Hanakāpī‘ai Falls Trail on Sunday at around 11:45 a.m.
The hiker reportedly fell off the trail and was located 30 feet below the Hanakāpī‘ai Falls, police shared.
The victim’s body was recovered by personnel with the Kauai Fire Department, while Air 1 assisted first responders.
“The Kauaʻi Police Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Wu,” Kennison Nagahisa, Acting Captain of KPD’s Investigative Services Bureau, shared in the release.
An investigation into how Wu fell is currently ongoing as investigators await the results of an autopsy.
The department shared that there are portions of the famous waterfall trails that get very narrow, and the drop-off is severe.
