With Independence Day arriving next week, it’s important to remember safety most of all, especially if you’re taking time to light off fireworks.
The National Fire Protection Association is stressing the danger of the Fourth of July spectacle, noting that while they may be synonymous with the holiday, they need to be handled with caution.
“Each July 4th, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks,” the NFPA website said.
Now, officials are sharing tips on how to be prepared for the holiday light show, including buying your fireworks from state-approved vendors, reading warnings and instructions before use, and lighting them somewhere smooth and away from materials that could catch fire.
Officials also urge those lighting off fireworks to have a fire extinguisher nearby, keep them away from children, and never attempt to light a “dud” a second time.
Instead, fireworks that fail to go off should be submerged in water before being thrown away to prevent potential dangers.
For those with pets, officials are reminding owners to keep a close eye on them, as many will run away during fireworks shows if they get scared.
Keeping your animal indoors, with a TV or some form of distraction, can help them get through the sometimes stressful holiday.
If your pet does somehow get away, checking with your local shelter should be your first step, as they often see an increase in lost animals around the Fourth of July.
