A Michigan man suffered severe injuries while in Alaska after he was mauled by a bear, Alaska State Troopers shared on Wednesday. The man was able to walk away from the encounter thanks to his bottle of pepper spray.

The grizzly left puncture wounds in Nicholas Kuperus’s arm. The 33-year-old was assisted by Alaska State Troopers thanks to a satellite communications device he used to call for help.

Troopers shared that they transported him from the site of the mauling to a waiting ambulance in the community of Glennallen.

The female grizzly was a surprise to Kuperus and his fellow hunters who were near the upper East Fork Indian River, according to troopers. The mama bear was also with her three cubs.

The attack left Kuperus severely injured, but he was able to stop it thanks to a bear spray that he had with him, troopers shared.

Responding troopers reached Kuperus via state aircraft that landed on a nearby ridge top and transported him to the ambulance.
