A new poll has found that a majority of Americans are not certain that President Joe Biden should serve a second term, with his age playing a major factor.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 86% of Americans think the 81-year-old president is too old to serve another term as president.
Biden’s age was a major topic in the last election and remains one now following the report from special counsel Robert Hur that claimed Biden had a “poor memory” and was beginning to fade mentally.
The president pushed back against the report in a fiery press conference last Thursday.
“My memory is fine,” Biden said during a press conference on Thursday, adding, “I know what the hell I’m doing!”
Still, the poll found that age is a big concern for a majority of Americans. In fact, not only for Biden but also for Republican front-runner, former President Donald Trump.
According to the poll, Trump’s age is also a major issue for Americans, as 59% of respondents said that both the 77-year-old former president and Biden are too old to serve another four years.
Looking at Trump alone, 62% of respondents said they think he is too old to serve as president, though party lines play a major factor for both men, with the opposite party being more likely to find their opponent too old.
Among independents, 91% think Biden is too old for another term, and 71% think the same for Trump.
The poll from ABC/Ipsos comes a week after a poll from NBC News found that 76% of Americans are concerned Biden is not mentally fit for another four years.
It also comes after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton shared with MSNBC that Biden’s age was a big concern for his campaign.
“I talked to people in the White House all the time, and you know, they know it’s an issue, but as I like to say, ‘look, it’s a legitimate issue,’” Clinton said. “It’s a legitimate issue for [ex-President Donald] Trump, who’s only three years younger, right? So it’s an issue.”
Concerns surrounding the president’s age have only increased in recent months, with an ABC News/Washington Post poll from September reporting that 74% of Americans thought Biden was too old for a second term.
With the 2024 election months away, many are wondering what the next steps for Democrats could be, with Americans worry not seeming to subside.
The poll was conducted from Feb. 9-10 and included the responses of 528 US adults. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
