Despite pandemic warnings to practice safety in public situations and around unfamiliar people since the spring of 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, or perhaps in some cases in rebellion against them, sexually-transmitted diseases were on the rise in 2021 for a second straight year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC reported 2.5 million total STD infections nationwide in 2021, a historic number that beat the previous record of 2.4 million set just a year earlier in 2020.
A variety of different STD’s are on the rise. Gonorrhea infections were up 2.8% and Chlamydia infections climbed by 3% despite having dipped in 2020.
And Syphilis numbers increased at a pace not seen since Harry Truman was in the Oval Office, jumping 26% in 2021.
A further, more detailed breakdown is forthcoming when the CDC releases its full STD Surveillance Report for 2021.
