While not at an all-time peak, a new report reveals that teens in the U.S. were still three times more likely to be killed in 2020 and 2021 than they were 60 years prior in 1960.
Homicide across all age groups was shown to be greater than it was in the 60s in the report by the Council on Criminal Justice.
Americans in their early 20s – aged 20-25 – rank as the most likely to be killed by homicides.
The homicide rate for teenagers reached its all-time peak in the mid 1990s, and the good news is that homicides are down so far in 2023.
Overall homicides were down 9.4% in the first half of 2023 over the first half of 2022.
As for Detroit, the city is on pace for its lowest homicide rate since 1966, according to city and county officials. The first 11 months of 2023 saw an 18% reduction in murders from the first 11 months of 2022.
