Former President Donald Trump is continuing to fight numerous legal cases across the country. While speaking in Iowa to a crowd of his supporters, he shared that he has more than $100 million in legal fees.
Trump was speaking to his supporters in Sioux City, Iowa, as he continues to campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nominee.
The former president remarked that since he began his second life as a politician, he has lost billions of dollars.
“It’s cost me a couple of billion dollars to be a politician. Everyone else makes, they make [money]. I said, ‘No, we can’t do that.’ I could have made a fortune. The countries are coming [and saying,] ‘We’d like to build a job, and we’d like to have you involved.’ Billions. I say, I tell my kids, ‘Sorry, kids, we can’t do it. I’m president.’ I respected the office,” Trump said.
Trump continued saying that the money he’s lost has only compounded thanks to his ongoing court battles.
“And, of course, then they made it much worse with legal fees. I have $100 million worth of legal fees,” Trump said. “And they’re doing good. At least I have good lawyers because you can spend $100 million and have lousy lawyers too. It happens.”
Hitting on a point he often makes, the former president shared that he denied several opportunities to make money during his presidency, saying he had “too much respect for the office.”
Trump is currently fighting four different criminal cases, including two federal cases, brought by special counsel Jack Smith, who charged the former president with 37 felony counts for his handling of classified documents. The second case involved Trump’s efforts to remain in office after the 2020 election, resulting in four felony charges being brought against him.
The other two cases were brought against the president in state court. One of them is in Georgia, where Trump is facing 13 charges in a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act case for his efforts to overturn election results in the state.
In New York, Trump is facing 34 felony counts as he allegedly falsified business records in an alleged hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.
