The Mississippi mother of an 11-year-old is saying that her son is “blessed” to be alive after an encounter with a Mississippi police officer left the unarmed boy shot in the chest and wounded.
Now, Carlos Moore, an attorney representing the boy and his mother, is calling for the officer to be fired after the incident left Aderrien Murry hospitalized for five days with a collapsed lung, lacerated liver, and fractured ribs.
“An 11-year-old Black boy in the city of Indianola came within an inch of losing his life,” Moore shared on Thursday.
Moore shared with the Associated Press that the officer, who works for the Indianola Police Department, shot the boy in the chest inside his home on Saturday morning.
“We are demanding justice,” Moore said during a live streamed protest outside Indianola City Hall.
Aderrien’s mother, Nakala Murry, spoke during the protest, saying she does not understand why the boy was shot. The mother could be seen holding a sign that read, “Your ‘best’ cop shot my baby.”
“This was the worst moment in my life, and I feel like nobody cares. That’s my child, y’all,” Nakala Murry said.
Moore pointed out the severity of the incident, saying that Aderrien had “done nothing wrong and everything right.”
Police arrived at Nakala Murry’s home after she asked her son to call 911 at about 4 a.m. on Saturday, Moore said. The mother had asked the boy to call the police because one of her children’s fathers showed up at the home and was threatening her.
“He called the police to come to his mother’s rescue,” Moore said of Aderrien. “He called his grandmother to come to his mother’s rescue. The police came there and escalated the situation.”
After calling the police, two officers arrived, and one of them kicked the front door before Nakala Murry could open it, Moor said. The attorney added that the woman told the officers the intruder had left the home and that just her children were inside.
It was then that Moore says his client heard Sgt. Greg Capers, who is Black, yell into the home that anyone inside should come out with their hands up.
Responding to the order, Moore says that Aderrien walked into the living room with his hands empty, and Capers shot him in the chest.
The Indianola City Attorney has confirmed that Capers is the officer who fired his weapon, The Enterprise-Tocsin reported.
Moore confirmed to the AP that Capers has been suspended with pay while an investigation into the shooting takes place.
