A North Carolina woman has found herself on the wrong side of the law after she allegedly stole a police cruiser and led officers on a high-speed chase.

The incident occurred late Sunday night on Highway 74 about an hour west of Charlotte, where an officer with the Shelby Police Department had left his vehicle to "speak to someone," the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told WSOC-TV.

As the officer was talking to the individual, the unidentified woman climbed into the cruiser and sped away, prompting a high-speed chase.

According to WSOC, the chase went on for several miles and stretched across two counties, reaching speeds of 140 miles per hour.

The pursuit finally ended in Gastonia after officers flattened the vehicle's tires with stop sticks -- but that wasn't the end of the ordeal.

Officers could not convince the woman to get out of the cruiser on her own and eventually had to smash a window to pull her out, the Highway Patrol told WSOC.

The woman was taken into custody without further incident. Specific charges weren't immediately announced.
