A man was shot to death during an exchange of gunfire with two police officers this morning in Chesterton, Indiana, leaving one officer wounded.

It happened at about 8 a.m. outside the Hilton Garden Inn at State Road 49 and the Indiana Toll Road.

Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson says police were called to the hotel on a report of a man acting suspiciously.

“It was a rapidly evolving situation at the hotel this morning,” Richardson said during a news conference, “where unfortunately our officers had to exchange gunfire with the suspect.”

It’s unclear exactly what transpired before the shots were fired.

The man he described as a suspect was dead at the scene.

The officer who was shot is 33.

He’s been on the job for about 5 years.

The chief said his prognosis is good.

He would not say where the officer was hit.

There were more than fifty evidence markers at the scene, most next to shell casings.  One was placed next to a gun.

“What often goes unseen is our officers putting their lives on the line for our community and two of our officers did just that.”

Indiana State Police are investigating the incident.

State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield said, “we won’t interview the officers for several sleep cycles, which is standard practice in officer-involved shootings.”
