The piping plover chick banded with a yellow star, and named Mavis in honor of Chicago-born, legendary gospel and R&B singer Mavis Staples has died, according to the Chicago Piping Plovers conservation organization.
There was no further information available about Mavis' death.
Mavis was one of four new chicks who hatched in June at Montrose Beach to parents Imani and Sea Rocket.
The other new, little plovers are named Buddy, Frankie, and Tweedy in honor of local music legends Buddy Guy, Frankie Knuckles and Jeff Tweedy.
