Ryan Poles, Bears confident in Justin Fields entering 2023: 'I'm excited for what he's going to show this upcoming year'

(670 The Score) The Bears held the No. 1 overall pick at the start of this offseason and had the choice to select a new quarterback for their future if they had wanted. Instead, they traded that selection away and stood by quarterback Justin Fields.

On Friday, Bears general manager Ryan Poles reiterated why that was the case, as the team strongly believes that Fields is in position for a breakout season in 2023 and that he'll continue his ascent from there.

"You can see him taking each and every step as a leader and kind of taking over the locker room and the offense," Poles said. "We're confident. Obviously, we showed that with our actions. I'm excited for what he's going to show this upcoming year."

The No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields has completed 59.7% of his passes for 4,112 yards, 24 touchdowns and 21 interceptions over 27 career games. In 2022, Fields threw for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while rushing for 1,143 yards and eight scores.

After going 3-14 in 2022, the Bears boosted their offense around Fields with the acquisition of receiver DJ Moore as part of the trade that sent the No. 1 overall pick to the Panthers. Chicago signed veteran running back D'Onta Foreman and tight end Robert Tonyan Jr. in free agency and drafted offensive tackle Darnell Wright, running back Roschon Johnson and receiver Tyler Scott.
