(670 The Score) The Cubs made five roster moves before opening their series against the Pirates on Tuesday evening at Wrigley Field.
Chicago placed left-hander Brandon Hughes on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation, recalled utilityman Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Iowa, selected left-hander Anthony Kay from Triple-A, optioned right-hander Jeremiah Estrada to Triple-A and transferred right-hander Nick Burdi to the 60-day injured list.
Hughes has a 7.24 ERA in 17 appearances for the Cubs this season.
Mastrobuoni has hit .161 with no homers, one RBI and a .462 OPS in 25 games for the Cubs this season. He’ll be the designated hitter and bat seventh for the Cubs when they host the Pirates on Tuesday.
Kay, 28, has a 4.50 ERA in 23 appearances for the Iowa Cubs this season. He’ll be available Tuesday evening. He posted a 5.48 ERA in 28 appearances for the Blue Jays between 2019 and 2022.
Estrada has a 6.75 ERA in 12 appearances for the Cubs in 2023.
Burdi has been out since May with appendicitis.
