Report: Phillies are in on Craig Kimbrel trade talks

(AUDACY) The Phillies had scouts at the Cubs-Diamondbacks game at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon, and they have their eyes on a few Chicago relievers as the trade deadline looms Friday.

The Phillies continue to be involved in the trade talks for Cubs star closer Craig Kimbrel, insider Jon Heyman of MLB Network and Audacy Sports reported. The Phillies bullpen has been a glaring shortcoming for the team in recent years and with the team just four games behind the injury-riddled New York Mets for first place in the NL East, Philadelphia could decide to buy at the deadline and make a push for a playoff berth. The Phillies are 6-4 in their last 10 to improve to an even 48-48 on the season.

Philadelphia is also interested in Chicago lefty reliever Andrew Chafin (1.37 ERA in 42 appearances entering Saturday) and righty reliever Ryan Tepera (3.02 ERA in 41 appearances), Heyman reported.

Kimbrel has been dominant in his All-Star season, posting a 0.51 ERA and 0.68 WHIP in 37 appearances. He has 22 saves and has struck out 61 batters in 35 1/3 innings entering play Saturday.
