(670 The Score) With veteran catcher Yan Gomes ailing after taking a backswing to his head in a win Monday, the Cubs promoted 24-year-old catcher Miguel Amaya from Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday.

Gomes exited in the second inning of the Cubs’ 5-1 victory against the Nationals on Monday, one inning after getting knocked on the top of the head. The Cubs were still evaluating Gomes as of late Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

Amaya is the 14th-ranked prospect in the Cubs’ farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. He was more highly regarded in recent years before being plagued by injuries. Amaya was hitting .273 with four homers, eight RBIs and a 1.070 OPS in 13 games at Double-A this season.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs designated left-hander Ryan Borucki for assignment. Borucki posted a 12.00 ERA in nine appearances for Triple-A Iowa this season.

The Cubs visit the Nationals on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. CT, with pregame coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. on 670 The Score.
