(670 The Score) White Sox right-hander Michael Kopech reported to the team's spring training facility in Glendale, Arizona on Tuesday, which marked his return to baseball after he opted out of the 2020 season.
Kopech hasn't pitched in a regular-season game since making his fourth MLB start back on Sept. 5, 2018, after which he was diagnosed with a torn UCL that required Tommy John surgery. Once a prized prospect for the White Sox, the 24-year-old Kopech could factor into the team's rotation once he has appropriately ramped up following his long layoff.
White Sox ace Lucas Giolito visited with Kopech on Tuesday and believes he's ready to work -- but initially at a slower pace.
"He looks great," Giolito said. "Body looks good. All that stuff is checking off. I know that he's been working very, very hard. Despite the decision to not play last year, he definitely missed baseball. He's excited to be back. And the expectations are pretty high. I mean, he has some of the best stuff in the league.
"He has to kind of move at the right pace, can't rush into it, can't try too hard. Nothing ever good comes from that. I think (White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz) will definitely be pretty hands-on with him as far as his progression and where he needs to be.
"I have full confidence in his ability, and I'm looking forward to having him on the team soon."
In December 2016, the White Sox acquired Kopech as part of a trade with the Red Sox that sent ace Chris Sale to Boston. Giolito was also acquired in a deal that month, one that sent outfielder Adam Eaton to the Nationals.
While the 26-year-old Giolito has proved his place as one of the best pitchers in baseball, Kopech has made just four starts since making his big league debut in August 2018.
The White Sox aren't expected to press Kopech into their rotation until he's deemed fully ready to handle that role, something that seems unlikely for Opening Day.
