CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A second suspect has been taken into custody after a high-speed chase through the south suburbs that ended in a crash and a manhunt in Wilmington.

The Wilmington Police Department posted the alert on their Facebook page at about 6 a.m. Wednesday, saying they were conducting a manhunt in the Northcrest area of the southwest suburb.

The manhunt began after two people stole a vehicle at gunpoint in Calumet City and led multiple police agencies on a high-speed chase through the south suburbs before and then down I-57 to Wilmington, police said. The suspects then crashed the stolen car into a fence in Wilmington at Margarette and Charlotte streets and ran off.

One person was taken into custody after he broke into a home in Wilmington, Wilmington Police Chief Philip Arnold said. The homeowner fired shots at that person, driving him away until police took him into custody. Police found him hiding under a trampoline in a yard next door.

Neither the suspect nor the homeowner were injured.

The second suspect was in custody shortly after 10 a.m., police said. Police Chief Phillip Arnold said the second suspect, believed to be from Calumet City, was caught in abandoned barn after officers searched on for him on foot.

Arnold thanked law enforcement agencies in the massive response that included a SWAT team and several police canine teams. Coincidentally, Will County was holding a training exercise for the canine teams Wednesday. He said the pair are likely to face aggravated carjacking, home invasion and burglary charges in the case which started in Cook County and ended nearly 50 miles away.

School was cancelled for the day and police lifted a shelter in place order after they caught the second suspect.
