The SPCA Serving Erie County began round the clock care and is happy to report that Charlie is doing much better.
"Charlie is holding his own today. He's up and around and wagging his tail like crazy," said Chief Communications Officer Gina Browning.
Charlie has a blood disease. He has been unable to make his own platelets. He underwent a blood transfusion Wednesday night. Browning said new blood work shows his platelet levels are up slightly, which is a good sign. There is still concern about his red blood cell count which has not changed.
Chief Veterinary Officer Helene Chevalier cautions that he is not out of the woods and the prognosis could change in a matter of hours if they don't get a handle on the blood disease.
"We see a spirit in this dog to survive," said Browning. "It's because so many people in this community are offering their prayers and love for him."
The response has been overwhelming and not just here in Western New York. "There are people throughout the country who are sending cards and well wishes. We have received some tips and that will help further our investigation," said Browning, who calls the outpouring inspiring.
Anyone with information that could assist the SPCA is encouraged to call 875-7360 and ask for an officer or dispatch operator.
