Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Edward Grosz as Auxiliary Bishop of Buffalo.
Grosz steps down upon reaching the retirement age for bishops of 75.\
According to a statement from the Diocese, Grosz will continue to provide sacramental ministry in the Diocese throughout his retirement.
Grosz has long been the target of protestors and victims of abuse given his long tenure and ties to the Diocese.
"There is nothing more gross than the behavior of Bishop Grosz," said James Faluszczak, a former priest in Erie, Pennsylvania who was abused by priests as child, back in June of 2018.
During a Monday morning interview with WBEN, Bishop Edward Scharfenberger said he was well aware of the way Grosz is viewed.
"It becomes a bit of a lightning-rod situation," Scharfenberger said on WBEN."Bishop Grosz has been in the Diocese for a long time, and has been associated by some as being a part of many of the problems the Diocese has been facing."
