LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WBEN) - While Governor Andrew Cuomo seeks to replace license plates in New York, a bill has been introduced in the New York State Legislature which would waive the fees for a new license plate.
State Senator Rob Ortt introduced a bill in the senate while a similar bill was introduced in the assembly. The bill would waive the $25 dollar fee for a new license plate for residents forced to get new license plates in the event that the state mandates a new plate design.
"The reaction to this has been almost universal as far as the opposition," Ortt said outside the Niagara County Courthouse on Friday. "The feeling from both sides of the aisle is that this is nothing more than a cash grab by the Governor of New York State."

August 23, 2019 New Yorkers have five different options of license plates to choose from by September 2. While most of the plates feature some sort of symbolism related to the Statue of Liberty, one plate option features the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, formerly known as the Tappan Zee Bridge, in New York City.
"The Brooklyn Bridge would be more iconic than the Tappan Zee Bridge or the Mario Cuomo Bridge," Ortt said.
