Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Due to Concerns over the spread of Coronavirus, the Diocese of Buffalo is encouraging parishioners to seek smaller gatherings in order to adhere to emergency provisions that restrict assemblies to less than 250 people.

Bishop Edward Scharfenberger said that area Catholics are not obligated to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, including Easter, during the coronavirus threat. Until further notice, the Diocese directs people to use their prudent judgment as to whether or not to attend Mass.

All other parish events and celebrations, including Confirmations and Lenten penance services are being postponed until at least the end of the month.

Further guidance will be provided regarding April and May as developments become clear.

Those who wish to continue to attend Mass on weekdays and weekends are encouraged to seek smaller gatherings in order to adhere to emergency provisions issued by the County Executive and the Commissioner of Health of Erie County, NY that restrict assemblies to less than 250 persons.

The Bishop encouraged those with the ability to seek out local parishes that are live-streaming their services online.

Catholics aren't the only ones affected by the outbreak. The Chapel, a Christian church in Getzville, announced on Facebook that events are still on as scheduled at their Niagara Falls, Cheektowaga, and Lockport locations, with the exception of Shine and King's World events.

Gatherings at the Cross Point campus is canceled on Sunday. Pastor Jerry Gillis is asking parishioners at Cross Point not to attend the other events, but is instead encouraging online viewings.
