BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – Two students and two staff members from Buffalo Public Schools are under a quarantine after they returned to the United States from Italy, according to the district’s superintendent.
Dr. Kriner Cash did not say which school or schools the four were from, but noted that they are seven days into the 14-day quarantine.
Cash said any confirmed cases of coronavirus will result in a closure of the specific school.
“(It would be) a two day or three day kind of a thing,” Cash said. “I’m waiting for New York State guidance on that type of guidance…One is too many for me.”
To accommodate students who don’t have e-learning capabilities at home, Cash said the district could supply students with tablets and even provide them with temporary wifi hot spots. Younger students could also receive a package of learning supplies so they can work from home.
“I’m looking at best practices from Washington State and looking down in Miami where they said they’re ready to go with something like that,” Cash said.
More than 100 people are under quarantine in Erie County due to the virus that has affected more than 100,000 people across the world and killed thousands. There are multiple confirmed cases of coronavirus in New York, though there have been none in Erie County as of Friday afternoon.
Still, Cash assured that the schools are taking every precaution. Students and staff are being educated about the virus and the district has supplied each classroom with hand sanitizers and enough cleaning supplies to last through the end of the school year.
The cleaning standards also apply to school buses and in school cafeterias.
