BUFFALO (WBEN) - On Tuesday morning, U.S. Attorney JP Kennedy and CBP officials held a press conference near the Peace Bridge to discuss the massive increase in local drug seizures since border restrictions went into effect on March 21.

"For the second time in as many weeks, agents of Customs and Border Protection successfully interdicted a multimillion-dollar load of marijuana that was being unlawfully imported into the United States from Canada," said Kennedy.

On June 13, 30-year-old Gurpreet Singh, a citizen of India, was arrested and charged with unlawful importation of over 1,000 kilograms of marijuana, and he faces a mandatory minimum imprisonment of 10 years. The trailer, stopped at the Peace Bridge, contained thousands of vacuum-sealed bags that held more than 3,300 lbs., which carries a street value in excess of $5 million.

On June 5, another trailer was stopped, containing more than 1,600 vacuum-sealed bundles of nearly 1,800 lbs. of marijuana, which carries a street value in excess of $2.5 million.

“As criminals are determined to exploit our vulnerabilities during this unprecedented time in our country’s history, CBP remains steadfast in our commitment to protect our Nation,” said Buffalo Field Office Director Rose Brophy. “Our CBP officers have remained vigilant and focused, and their efforts have resulted in over 8,700 pounds of narcotics seized since March 21.”
