Buffalo, NY (WBEN)  Now that New York's Democratic leaders have canceled the June 23rd presidential primary out of coronavirus concerns, the experts are pondering the impact the decision may have on a special election that was originally to be held Tuesday, as well as the other primary election races.

Will there be a significant shift in turnout?

The NY27 special election was originally scheduled to take place today, Yuesday, April 28.

"It's going to affect turnout, the extent of which I do not know," says Erie County Democratic Elections Commissioner Jeremy Zellner. "Obviously there was a lot of campaigning, but Senator Sanders has since dropped out and endorsed Vice President Biden, so I don't know how hotly contested that primary would have been anyway.

In particular, how could this affect the NY27 special election between Chris Jacobs and Nate McMurray? "I think this is the most Republican district in the state," says Langworthy. "Senator Jacobs has a proven track record of successful leadership and a successful candidate at the ballot box. I think he will perform very well," Zellner, who is also Erie County's Democratic party chairman, doesn't think McMurray is relying on a cavalry to help him. "He's been working very hard, talking to voters for two years. He's trying to put himself in a strong position to win the special election, and I think he will do well."
