BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - In an alarming jump in the number of coronavirus-related deaths involving Erie County residents, County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced Tuesday evening the total number of deaths is now 101.

In a post to Twitter, Poloncarz said, "It went up so much from 2 days ago because @ECDOH received confirmation of 31 deaths that occurred since 4/10 that we had not known about previously."

I just received some very sad news: Erie County's total number of deaths from the #Coronavirus pandemic has risen to 101. It went up so much from 2 days ago because @ECDOH received confirmation of 31 deaths that occurred since 4/10 that we had not known about previously. pic.twitter.com/bZW5sYp5Rx

Earlier Tuesday, Poloncarz announced the county now has 1,730 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The majority of the confirmed cases are women. 931 females have coronavirus, including two girls between the ages of five and nine. There are 799 males who have contracted the virus, including two boys between the ages of five and 14.

New York State, meanwhile, is reporting that 94 residents of Erie County died because of coronavirus. Within area nursing homes and adult care homes, the state reported 36 fatalities. We have inquired to the Erie County Department of Health on the discrepancy. A spokesperson said they are reporting the data they are able to confirm and that they will continue to update as new information comes in.
