Through the end of June, 1,254 drivers have been arrested for being impaired, which are comparable numbers to last year but an 11-percent drop from 2017.
"It's encouraging that we are in a period of declining arrests, with more and more people understanding both the effects that DWI crashes have on our community and that the penalities associated with a DWI arrest can be legally and personally overwhelming," said Poloncarz. "With the extended weekend coming up, it's important that people drive responsibly on our roadways."
Central Police Services Commissioner James Jancewicz noted that police agencies around the county will be adding DWI patrols and checkpoints throughout the week.
"The reduction in DWI arrests is good news and is evidence of tthe consistent efforts of law enforcement to detect and arrest impaired drivers," said Jancewicz. "We must continue out vigilance and be ready to prosecute those who disregard this message and engage in this destructive behavior."
